Renaming “University Health Service (UHS)” to “University Medical Service Office (UMSO)” (effective from 1 April 2024)

25 March 2024

The University Health Service was established in 1970 to provide primary health care to the University members.  The service included outpatient medical service, emergency care, 24-hour observation service, health examination, laboratory service, referral to government hospitals, and dental service.  Compared to decades ago, UHS nowadays is not only a university health centre that provides health service to patients but a department with a diversified scope of functionality to cater to the University’s development and to fulfil clients’ various needs from time to time.  UHS is facing multiple changes in medical-related affairs at an exponential pace, including staff medical benefits schemes, medical service integration, information handling, expectations and demands on health service provision, management of public health emergencies and crises within the campus, etc.  To better reflect the functionality and level of responsibility of the UHS, the Administrative and Planning Committee (AAPC) has approved a change of name from “University Health Service (UHS)” to “University Medical Service Office (UMSO)” effective from 1 April 2024.  Given the fast pace of increasing expectations and demands for medical services, as well as the complexity of medical domain development, UMSO will continue our endeavours in managing the medically related affairs of the University.
